WHAT IT IS: An app that offers location-based audio tours.

WHY WE LIKE IT: Detour is a cool, new way to explore cities in the U.S. and abroad. These high-quality guided walking tours, which are narrated by locals and celebrities, allow you to travel on your own and at your own pace. The app knows your location, so it automatically triggers the narration and gives you turn–by-turn directions. Plus, you can wirelessly sync with your friends and family so everyone can listen together.

It’s no secret that we love traveling (and apps!), which is why this one immediately caught our eye when it first launched a couple of years ago. Founded in San Francisco by Andew Mason (you may remember him as the co-founder and CEO of Groupon), Detour has since ventured into 17 cities across the globe.

The company is also making their technology available so people can create their own “detours”. Now you can be a tourist and a guide in your own city!

HOW MUCH IT COSTS: Each 30 to 90-minute Detour costs around $5. But, in celebration of the company’s worldwide expansion, all Detours are free this summer. Yes, you read that right: free until Labor Day! (After that, you can use our code for a discount.)
.
NOW, TAKE THE FIRST STEP: Visit the website and browse through 150 audio walks that are organized by city, iconic places, and notable voices. You can download the Detour app for iOS or Android to find and take tours in your location. Once you purchase a Detour, it’s yours to keep. Happy detouring!
