WHY WE LIKE IT: It’s the time of year for making (and breaking) resolutions. Well, if one of your goals is to add a little more exercise and mindfulness to your daily routine, then here’s an app for you. With the Down Dog app, you can enjoy a studio-like yoga practice in your home. Not only is it extremely easy to use, but it’s incredibly customizable, too. The technology generates a new vinyasa yoga sequence each time you use the app, so it’s always fresh and interesting.
Whether you’re brand new to yoga or a seasoned yogi, Down Dog has lots of options. You can choose the sequence type (Intro to Yoga, Full, Short, Quick Flow, and Restorative) along with the level and length of time. Best of all, the app doesn’t sound robotic; the instructor’s voice is soothing and she even gives detailed pointers. Plus, there are photos of each pose and a matching playlist to boot. No wonder it’s the highest rated yoga app on the App Store!
And there’s more. You can save your favorites practices and download them so you can practice offline. No more excuses!
Launched in 2015, Down Dog is the creation of two Brown University grads who are passionate about yoga. Before starting the company, one attended Harvard Law School and the other was a software engineer at Google. Now they’re helping people all over the world embark on a yoga journey. (You can read about them here.)
HOW MUCH IT COSTS: It’s free to download and use. There is also a premium version that allows you to skip poses, focus on certain areas, choose the amount of spoken instruction, and change the playlist.
