WHAT IT IS: The purple icon on your iPhone. It’s where you’ll find podcasts.ec34ec9c-3efa-4048-850e-b3040f1e423bWHY WE LIKE IT: Are podcasts the new radio? We think so! And we’re in good company. When we first featured “The Purple Button” back in Volume 25, podcasts were a relatively new phenomenon. Since then, the podcast industry has grown exponentially. Whether you want to keep up with the news, sports, politics, design, your favorite Netflix series, music, comedy, or more, there is most likely a podcast for you. And best of all—they’re free! While we could spend days talking about podcasts from A to Z, here are a sampling of a few on our playlists:How I Built This with Guy Raz
This popular NPR podcast explores the stories behind some of the world’s best-known companies. Raz interviews the entrepreneurs who started these companies and shares intimate details of their journeys. Learn how Southwest Airlines, Ben & Jerry’s, Patagonia, SoulCycle, Spanx, Whole Foods, TOMS, Kickstarter, and more got off the ground.

Recode Decode Hosted by Kara Swisher
Silicon Valley journalist Kara Swisher hosts interviews with the “who’s who” of the tech world. Tune in each week to hear her candid conversations with tech execs, politicians, celebrities, and others as she explores the technology topics that are reshaping our world.

StartUp
This podcast originally chronicled the real-time story of Alex Blumberg on his quest to build the podcast company Gimlet Media. Now in its 8th season, the podcast continues as a documentary series about entrepreneurial life. And what a difference a few years makes. Last month music-streaming giant Spotify announced its’ acquisition of Gimlet Media in a deal that is rumored to be worth more than $200 million!

Side Hustle School with Chris Guillebeau
This is a daily show for anyone who wants to start an income-earning project on the side. Each episode features someone who started a side hustle and includes their trials and tribulations, successes, and results.

Happier with Gretchen Rubin
Hosted by Gretchen Rubin (bestselling author of “The Happiness Project” and other books) and her sister Elizabeth Kraft (a TV writer and producer living in Hollywood), this weekly podcast shares practical advice, happiness hacks, and try this at home tips—all with the purpose of becoming happier, healthier, more creative, and more productive. With more than 70 million downloads, this sisterly banter has clearly resonated with people and created a bit of a happiness revolution. (Note that Kraft also hosts a weekly podcast with her writing partner and friend Sarah Fain, which is aptly titled Happier in Hollywood.)

The Sheri + Nancy Show
Sheri Salata (former Executive Producer of The Oprah Winfrey Show) and Nancy Hala (a brand strategist) are long-time friends who met in Chicago. After moving to the West Coast they joined forces and started a media company focused on transforming their lives. Their weekly podcast centers around “The Pillar Life”, which they describe as “a life guidance system to ignite the eight cornerstones of a happy life.” Listening to Sheri and Nancy converse is like being among friends as they share their stories, interview experts, build their company, and reimagine their lives. Everyone is invited to join their “Dreamtribe”!
